Postcard Swaps

This year we are trying to collect 100 postcards from around the world. Here are two postcards that arrived today from Canada and Switzerland. We are replying to each card we receive, we either try to answer questions that have been asked or provide ideas for what our children think are healthy packed lunches. The postcards we get then get blown up on the colour photocopier and go on our postcard wall. I hope that all the children in our school get the chance to write a card. It makes the morning post a bit more interesting! If you'd like to take part and help us reach our goal; send us a card at the following address: Hawes Primary School, Town Head, Hawes, Wensleydale, North Yorkshire. DL8 3RQ
Don't forget to include your address on your card.
As you can see we have some nice Quentin Blake stamps to send you.

A Sad Story, With a Happy Ending

Dsc_5193

We were very sad when our lovely silver birch tree snapped in the wind and had to be removed. It stood some 15 feet tall! The sad thing is that it wouldnot have snapped in the strong winds, had it not been broken one night last year by people who didn't care very much about the quality of our environment. So we said goodbye to the tree and I sawed it up and it has gone on my fire.

However it will be replaced by another silver birch and hopefully this time people will be a little more thoughtful. When these young people are old enough to come out of an evening and play on our field I think they will look after the trees.

Homage to Street Talk

Without question Street Talk is the most captivating and awesome work by older primary children that I have come across  www.streettalk.edublogs.org   In essence Stephen Palmer (PalmyTeacher@) has worked with this great group of kids for over a year and created something that might never be equalled.

In many ways they have captured what we would like to do. However we haven't got the same level of kit and skills. Having said that we have enough to explore the theme and in time and with luck, we might achieve some success. Hopefully by the end of the summer we will have something to show and new slkills to use.

So to start with we are going to use the structure that Russell Street  www.theinsandouts.co.nz created and then in time we will perhaps begin to take ownership. How we will find time for this I am not quite sure, but it certainly is worth having a go. So when we come back after Christmas we'll dive into this project.

Fireworks Night UK

On November 5th we celebrate 'Fireworks night'. The tradition relates to stopping Guy Fawkes from blowing up the Houses of Parliament. Nowadays I think that it's about enjoying the start of Autumn and the dark nights with family and friends. We eat toffee apples and on this occasion my friends ate fondue, because we had some Swiss guests with us. it's really lovely what a  very old Single Lens Reflex camera can do. This is one of the very few national celebrations in England that is purely an English event. I am guessing people all over the world find excuses and reasons for their own firework celebrations.

We Had a Happy Easter...

The PTA organised an excellent Easter Competition for the children. Here is a series of photos that show some of the entries. The children must have been enthusiastic because they all remembered to bring their entries in thefirst day after the holiday ... well done everyone.
